Sailors’ Camp

English School early 19th Century

Pen and grey ink and watercolour, inscribed on the frame rebate: Patlaw c/o King Street Gallery SW

11 x 17 cm

This lively, large group of British sailors are encamped at the coast and look set to enjoy the content of the barrels in the foreground of the composition which are stored in the mouth of a cave, although an armed soldier stands on guard. Campfires are burning to cook and tents pitched. Some kind of salute with raised hats, perhaps in response to a cheer for King and country, appears to be taking place. Shipping is visible in the distance and a ladder attests to a lookout in place.
